Chess Club for 4th-8th graders

CURRICULUM DESCRIPTION / GOALS
To have fun playing chess! 
To play any finite game
To learn to play a better game of chess
To practice good sportsmanship

7 week club September 10 – October 29 - MONDAYS and THURSDAYS 3:00pm – 4:30pm

This club welcomes beginners and experts and everyone in between to learn, and continue to improve, playing the game of chess. As a club member, you will learn:


The basic playing board set up and what the different pieces can do
Basic play and introduction to strategies
Why the opening strategy sets the tone for the game
How to think ahead for your moves – and your opponents
How to read chess diagrams, and write your own
Advanced twists – can you play with only a king? - to challenge expert players

Materials will be provided: chess boards and pieces, rule books, paper, pencils and erasers and timers.

Parents / Volunteers to provide: snacks
