Students in grades 3-5 will take the PARCC on April 11-15, 2016. Every school is required that 95% of it's students to take the test or we automatically drop a letter grade on the state's grading system. So please make sure your child is at school this week and prepared to take the PARCC test.
WHY TAKE THE PARCC?

1. PHILOSOPHY OF FAIRNESS: A core belief held by the states that built and use the PARCC assessment system is that all students have the right to a quality, rigorous test that has the same high expectations for all students, regardless of zip code. Every child has a right to demonstrate what they know and can do.
2. EARLIER IS BETTER THAN TOO LATE: Though college and careers can seem far away from 3rd grade, and even 8th, students learn better and achieve more when they do so little by little throughout the years, instead of trying to reach goals they haven’t been prepared for in high school.
3. ASSESSES CRITICAL HIGHER LEVEL SKILLS: Many of the old state tests measured only lowerlevel skills. The new assessments serve as an “educational GPS system,” measure students’ current performance and point the way to what students need to learn by graduation so they are ready for college and/or a career.
4. ALIGNED TO WHAT TEACHERS TEACH: Recent studies have proven that PARCC aligns to state learning standards, so our students are being tested on what teachers are teaching and what students are learning.
5. MORE ACCESSIBLE: PARCC uses universal design principles to make the new tests as accessible as possible to all students, including English learners and students with disabilities. Universal design is rooted in a set of principles that give all students equal opportunity to show what they know and can do on PARCC assessments. This includes several PARCC features: popup glossary for preselected
words, digital notepad, calculator, and highlighter. These features make test taking more dynamic and user friendly, particularly compared with paper and pencil exams.
6. HELPS OUR SCHOOL AND STUDENTS: Unfortunately, if less than 95% of our students take the PARCC including those who are absent our school grade is dropped by one grade. On the positive side, taking the PARCC helps our school see where we are in terms of standardized testing as compared to other schools in the district. Likewise, our district gets to see how we compare with other districts in the state and our state with other states in the nation. If we want our children to have the same educational
opportunities as other high performing states, we need to know how we compare.
